Remembrance Day was marked with the ceremonial burial of an unknown Kiwi soldier, representing New Zealand's 30,000 war dead. A full military procession carried the casket of The Unknown Warrior, exhumed from a grave in France, through Wellington before 100,000 onlookers to an emotional farewell at his final resting place at the National War Memorial.

The Foreshore and Seabed Bill reared its head again unexpectedly early with the Government making a sudden announcement it would force the bill through under urgency, with NZ First's support. The bill passed several days later despite vigorous opposition from the Maori Party--who thinks it takes too much from Maori, and the National Party--who thinks it gives too much to Maori. Both sides complained about a new bill being introduced under urgency an hour before the debate, and one protester went so far as to throw an axe through the PM's electorate office window.

The Government was accused of using SIS spies to infiltrate Maori organisations to gather dirt, and Maori party leader Tariana Turia claimed her phone was tapped. All opposition parties have demanded an enquiry (Government spies aren't really meant to spy on peaceful opponents), but Helen Clark and the SIS are rubbishing the claims.

Yet more Hollywood stars have been hanging out in NZ, joining the casts of River Queen and King Kong. Timothy Dalton has been in Queenstown for the filming of Hercules, and Anthony Hopkins has been enjoying Invercargill while working on a movie called "The World's Fastest Indian" in which he plays a motorbike speedster.

Newly released scientific research may exonerate Maori from causing the extinction of the moa. It's reportedly likely that the giant birds were already in the throes of a deadly giant bird flu before the Maori penchant for feather cloaks and large roast drumsticks speeded their exit.

If you're from Wellington and feeling homesick, don't read this article from the San Francisco Chronicle. The author raves about the place: "the men as strapping and square-jawed as a young Sir Edmund Hillary, the women as healthy and fresh-faced as supermodel Rachel Hunter," and it gets better....

The All Blacks thrashed Italy 59-10 but only just squeaked through 26-25 in a thriller against Wales the following week. The close result (admittedly we did field a bit of a B side) has raised the tension ahead of the season's final match against France on Saturday.

There was nothing close about the Black Caps loss to Australia in the first cricket test. The loss by an innings and 156 runs at the Gabba was our second worst test defeat and our 76 run total in the second innings our lowest ever innings in Australia. In the nimble words of the Indian Express, we were "Aussiehilated."

The Silver Ferns went down 2-1 in their series against the Aussies, but fortunately we're still the better team (according to the captain).

And the proposed V8 supercar race through central Auckland has been scuppered by a resource consent committee, citing traffic and noise concerns. Wellington is now considering a bid to host the annual event.

Dunedin students annoyed police by setting the town alight (piles of junk at least) to celebrate the end of exams. A Rotorua pyromaniac (who probably hadn't completed university exams) wasn't treated as leniently, receiving a 13 month jail sentence for setting alight his own cell with a lighter he smuggled in strapped to his private parts.

And in an incredible, real life, 'isn't nature amazing' story, dolphins in Northland reportedly herded swimmers into a group and protected them for 40 minutes from a prowling Great White shark.
