Dear homesick Kiwi,

Well, another two weeks have flown by and it's HUHU time again! By the way, please feel free to forward the HUHU on to any other homesick Kiwis who could do with a dose of news from home, and drop me any comments - I was glad to hear last week from two Kiwis travelling through Savannah, Georgia, successfully dodging the hurricanes!

News

The results of the nationwide local government election postal ballots were tallied up over the weekend, resulting in a host of new mayors and an election-day controversy worthy of an American presidential race. Some votes have been mysteriously lost, the computer ate others and others still had to be thrown out after voters bungled the forms. Because hardly anyone votes anyway and a few rubbish bags of discarded votes can swing elections, there have been calls for a Parliamentary enquiry.

All the same, in the major centres the results were conclusive. Gary Moore held the Christchurch mayoralty by a mile, Kerry Prendergast fought off challengers in Wellington, and Auckland incumbent John Banks was swallowed whole by Dick Hubbard, the breakfast cereal baron. Hubbard has vowed to make Auckland feel more like small South Island towns and cancelled Banks's $1 billion motorway pet project before he had even taken over his car park.
Across the ditch, the contestants in the Australian general election included a party named "Enslave NZ", running on a platform of invasion and enslavement of all New Zealanders. The party performed poorly at the polls so we 'trusting innocents' look safe for another few years.
NZ literary icon Maurice Shadbolt, author of 'Season of the Jew' among many other novels and plays, died after a lengthy illness.
Despite opposition from a local activist group and objections from the National Party, the Government's handover of 14 lakes around Rotorua to Te Arawa looks certain to go ahead later this week.
And readers of the Daily Telegraph in the UK dropped Italy as their preferred travel destination in favour of New Zealand. Which is nice.

The NPC semi-finalists were decided last weekend. Wellington will meet Waikato on Friday night, and Canterbury will clash with first time semi-finalists Bay of Plenty on Saturday.

Team New Zealand, racing under their new black and red Emirates airline sails, won a regatta in Valencia after emerging victorious from duels with giants Alinghi and Oracle, among others.
And American glider pilot Steve Fossett will abandon Omarama, Otago as the base for his long-time gliding altitude record ambitions in favour of somewhere in Argentina.

The Government is considering a damage-limiting plan to leash in elderly drivers. The deal on the table would lower the bar for the elderly to pass their licence renewal tests in exchange for a promise they will stay within a set radius of home. Will this be any comfort to their neighbours?
TV celeb and orange juice entrepreneur Marc Ellis will be reconsidering his mediation skills after he attempted to break up a bar dispute by nibbling the ear lobe of one of the contestants. He received a punch for his troubles, but the incident was not referred to police.

And a Lower Hutt woman was shocked to discover from her power company that she was, in fact, dead, when she phoned them about a missing refund. The company first asked for proof she hadn't died, before realising they had filed a death certificate in the wrong place.

IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR US-BASED KIWIS

Thanks to new FDA regulations targeting terrorists who might try to import anthrax by disguising it as a jar of vegemite, we are no longer able to send food or drink to customers in the USA. We're sorry about this (for both of us) but the amount of paperwork required to send anything into the US sadly means it's just not viable anymore.

BUT, there are rumours that there'll be a fast track process soon which will enable us to resume, so fingers crossed!

In the meantime, we can still send you possum fur, bone-carvings, paua jewellery, health products and much more.....
