Dear homesick Kiwi,

Welcome to the 30th edition of The HUHU! Wellington's been trying to shake off winter with mixed results: a beautiful - even hot - day on Sunday, then pouring rain and gales yesterday. Hope it's nice wherever you are!

News

The NZ Army engineers in Iraq returned home early after rising violence around Basra meant they weren't able to do their job safely. Predictably, some commentators have accused the Govt of backing down from a fight, but the detachment was only trained and equipped for reconstruction work. The only notable shot fired was an accidental discharge on the firing range which landed the second-in-command with a court martial and $1400 fine.

Local government elections are being decided up and down the country by postal ballot at the moment. The public has reacted with the normal amount of apathy, and only the Auckland mayoralty race has consistently commanded headlines. The cereal baron Dick Hubbard, a late-comer to the race and political novice, has accused incumbent John Banks of dirty tricks after thousands of copies of an NBR article critical of Hubbard were dropped in letter boxes. How vicious is the fight getting? Well, Titewhai Harawira the purple-haired, fiery, veteran Maori-rights campaigner (not known as a calm, moderate sort of person) is actually mediating disputes between the three candidates.

From tomorrow onwards, Kiwis entering the US will be fingerprinted and photographed just like most countries' citizens. No more special treatment for helping out in Vietnam....
...then again, it's not altogether surprising considering police have just discovered a large Arab-run passport factory in an Auckland suburb.
The Northland property featured in cult surfing classic "Endless Summer" is up for grabs. At $3m plus, only the most affluent surfies need apply.

Christchurch rapper Scribe dominated the NZ Music Awards, winning all the major Tuis except Best International Act (teenage opera star Hayley Westenra) and Best Single (NZ Idol winner Ben Lummis).

Kiwi businessman Eric Watson, best known for owning the Warriors and brawling with Australian Russell Crowe in a London restaurant, is rumoured to be dating Nicole Kidman. His ex-wife Nicky Watson is now living with ex-league brat Matthew Ridge, who could also beat up Russell Crowe.
And Eagles guitarist Joe Walsh is unexpectedly flying to Wellington to perform at an anti-P (pure methamphetine) concert on Parliament's front lawn.
Sport
The Black Caps were decisively knocked out of the Champions Trophy by Australia, the best side in the world, before the quarter finals.
Our paralympians won a total of ten medals at the Athens Paralympics.
Wellington, North Harbour and Taranaki lead the NPC competition as crunch time fast approaches. Auckland only narrowly beat Southland last weekend, leading into their crucial showdown with Canterbury (who thrashed Taranaki) this weekend.
Only in New Zealand
A shock study has discovered that New Zealand students prefer drinking to studying.
A 120 year old live artillery shell was found set in the steps of a West Coast hotel.
And, encouraged by recent maltreatment pay-outs to abused inmates, one prisoner is suing the government for indirectly forcing him to passively smoke marijuana in prison, as he huddled in the cold with pot-smokers.
