Dear homesick Kiwi,

It's a bracing 3 degrees as I write this at 10.30am in Wellington - I think the coldest morning we've had so far. Still, it's clear and sunny so nothing really to complain about....

News

The Bay of Plenty hasn't been as lucky as Wellington, with a mini-tornado, floods and earthquakes all striking over the last week. The Army has moved in to Whakatane to help out, but it looks as if the worst is now over.

An angry Helen Clark imposed tough diplomatic sanctions on Israel when their government refused to acknowledge official requests for an explanation or apology after two suspected Mossad secret agents were jailed for attempting to fraudulently acquire NZ passports.
Clark's tough stance has earnt lavish praise from Islamic militant group Hamas, who have appreciated New Zealand's 'daring' in the face of the 'Zionist entity.' Not exactly the kind of friends we want, but some experts are picking that the endorsement could serve as shield for our military in Iraq.
A storm erupted over the possible inclusion of a toilet which brays like a donkey in New Zealand's next exhibition at the prestigious Venice Biennale art show. Some critics felt that particular work didn't represent the very best of NZ art and didn't deserve the $500,000 of Government backing. The same week, Te Papa shelled out $3.1 million for a painting by Colin McCahon - believed to be a record for a New Zealand painting.

The Prime Minister's motorcade is under fire for alleged speeding to deliver its cargo to Christchurch airport in time to fly to the rugby in Wellington, after her direct flight from Timaru was cancelled. Eyewitness Raymond Mitchell reported it "flashed past" him in Temuka. "They were dangerous. I was bloody horrified," confirmed his wife, Debbie.

The hills of Central Otago, already home to such celebrities as actor/wine-grower Sam Neill, could soon be ringing to the strains of "That Don't Impress Me Much" if singer Shania Twain gets her way. Deputy PM Michael Cullen, who has to approve major foreign purchases of NZ land, confirmed the singer, consistently at the top of country music and worst dressed charts, had applied to buy land in the area after two recent holidays.
Sport
The All Blacks toughed out a satisfying win against the Aussies at Westpac Stadium on Saturday. In persistent rain and un-Australian temperatures the All Blacks dominated possession and territory by a mile, and the final scoreline of 16-7 perhaps doesn't reflect the pitched battle which was fought largely on the Australian try-line.
Our forwards are likely to face an even stiffer challenge this weekend when we meet the South Africans. Reports from the All Black camp of several players suffering gastric upsets bring with them unpleasant echoes of the 1995 World Cup, but surely we're doing our own cooking this time?
The Tall Blacks basketballers lost the series against Australia 2-1, with a gritty win in Christchurch sandwiched between two fairly conclusive defeats.
Only in New Zealand
A Rangiora-based equestrian student proposed marriage to All Black flanker Richie McCaw with a body painted message and a streak across the ground where the ABs were training. However, even a newspaper's subsequent offer to mediate a meeting between the two has failed to attract interest from the world's best open-side.
And a Japanese tourist embarrassed himself by dislocating his jaw as he vomited on a scenic flight over Mt Cook. Local first aid workers weren't able to treat the unusual accident and he had to be taken to Twizel to be returned to a normal mouth-shut condition.
