After
his last speech triggered a national debate on race
relations and a big bounce-back for National in the
polls, Don Brash delivered his second
policy speech, on crime, amid much media
interest. He promised to build new prisons, expand the
DNA database and slash parole to combat violent crime.
Labour says it's too
expensive, the Greens say it's too nasty
and NZ First says it's plagiarism.

| Two
agents of Israel's secret service, Mossad, pleaded
guilty to attempting to falsely acquire NZ
passports. They are behind bars and face jail terms at
sentencing, while the Government is promising to demand
an official apology and a promise from Israel that they've
learnt their lesson. |

| A
proposed V8 supercar race around central Auckland
has the Catholic Church and Transit at
loggerheads. Like the council, the Catholics
are keen on the race while Transit shares many road-users'
concerns that it will make Auckland's dire traffic worse.
If the race goes ahead, the already enjoyable Auckland
traffic
webcams promise delightful viewing for everyone
south of the Bombay hills. |

| Our
rich are richer. Despite a door charge of $25m (up
from $15m) this year's membership of the Rich
List has swollen to 187, including lots of
new faces. |

| Remember
the Lord of the Rings? It's still keeping NZ on
the map, with seven percent of all visiting tourists claiming
it's the reason
for their visit. |

| And
the event which put Nelson on the map - the unexpectedly
fabulously successful Wearable Arts show - is moving
to Wellington next year. Nelsonians range from
bitter to furious, but the Wellington mayor is promising
the move has nothing to do with anti-Nelson sentiment
or a promised $7m new venue in the capital, it's just
that Wellington's better. |

| And
twenty years on from the momentous snap-election which
ousted Muldoon and radically changed our country's direction,
David Lange - now suffering from a rare plasma

| The
netballers reminded the Aussies who the world champs
are with a 3-0 series
whitewash (although the final match was a little
close for comfort). |
|
| After
the embarrassing test match series, our cricketers
cruised into the final of the one-day triangular tournament
against England and the Windies. If we win we'll be ranked
the second
best one day side in the world. If we lose...
well we still bowled England out for a humiliating 101
in the first
match. |
|
| And
a Kiwi is playing
a pivotal role in this year's Tour de France.
The only NZer in this year's race has the unglamourous
role of helping to position his team's star rider for
victory, while keeping himself out of the limelight and
the yellow jersey. |

| A
nine year old was questioned by police after she was found
wandering down a Lower Hutt street handing
out $100 notes to strangers. She noticed someone leave
a $6200 stack of bills in their car and decided some wealth
redistribution was in order, but under interrogation couldn't
really explain why. |
