Dear homesick Kiwi,

It's early days under the new coach and captain, but this fresh All Black squad has already given us the promise of glory again. I'm sure all you England-based homesick Kiwis are particularly relieved!

Yours,

NEWS

Boxing New Zealand is defending its decision to send Soulan Pownceby to the Olympics. Pownceby spent four years in jail during the 90s for the manslaughter of his infant daughter and critics say he shouldn't be representing NZ. Helen Clark made an odd demand that he publicly apologise, which he did last night in a tearful TV interview.

Kiwi engineers in Iraq were at the receiving end of a night time mortar attack on their barracks (shared with the Brits), but no one was hurt. Not so lucky were two Kiwi SAS soldiers injured in combat in Afghanistan. Both are now stable.
More winter storms closed the Desert Road and roads in Westland with snow, pelted Auckland with heavy hail, deluged rain on Wanganui and washed out a bridge near Motueka.
The fading ACT party elected Rodney Hide its new leader, and promptly dropped a point in the polls. Winston Peters wittily commented, "You can Hide but you can't run."
Lord of the Rings guru, the "assiduously dishevelled" Peter Jackson, was named the world's 12th biggest celebrity for 2003, and the 20th best paid. He's funnelling much of his earnings back into Wellington, developing world class production studios.

Former captain of the once-great England rugby team Martin Johnson survived a head-on car crash in bad weather on his way to a reunion with his old King Country team mates. His car was badly damaged but no one was injured.

SPORT
The All Blacks clinched a decisive 2-0 series victory over England with a 36-12 victory at Eden Park to follow the 36-3 drubbing at Carisbrook the week before.
The Herald editorial did not look favourably on the sniffy England coach's comment that "I still think we are the better team." The second test was marred with controversy after an England player was sent off after just ten minutes. Russell Brown summarises nicely: "Shaw's effort was hardly the most violent of test rugby incidents, but his intent was malign and cowardly and he was unfortunate enough to get caught." Full article.
The ABs meet Argentina this weekend. They are resting much of the team from last week, but McCaw's back after a head injury and Mehrtens will start after yet another dazzling cameo on Saturday, as he continues his comeback.
Just quietly, we were thrashed 3-0 in the cricket test series against England. The last match (Chris Cairns's last test) was wound up by England with a day and four wickets to spare.
Team New Zealand announced they will definitely be competing for the America's Cup in Spain in 2007, thanks to sponsorship from Emirates airline. Meanwhile, Russell Coutts could be without a berth after a rumoured split with defending champs Alinghi.
The glamour girls of New Zealand rowing, the Evers-Swindell twins, asserted their position as Olympic favourites with another world title in Switzerland.
A GLARING OMISSION

We forgot to mention last HUHU another Kiwi triumph in the lead-up to the Olympics: Sarah Ulmer and Greg Henderson both won gold at the world track cycling champs. StoryThanks Richard!

ONLY IN NEW ZEALAND
PM Helen Clark and TV host Paul Holmes were voted the least kissable Kiwis. At the other end of the chart were part-time All Black Carlos Spencer and Rachel Hunter.
And Maori TV, controversially funded $45m annually by the Government, has survived 3 months on air but remains coy on its ratings. Opposition parties have claimed no-one's watching it, but this reviewer finds it's actually quite good, with programmes like "Mitre 10 Marae DIY" and cooking show "Kai Time" to choose from.
