Dear
homesick Kiwi,
Making
a nice change from the recent tensions, on Monday the
country celebrated our democratic tradition: 150 years
of Parliament, the first country to extend the vote
to women and one of the first to include indigenous
representation in Parliament.

The
world's oldest true democracy (New Zealand) celebrated
the 150th anniversary of its Parliament on
Monday with a Parliamentary debate and a ball in Wellington.
This article on Stuff gives an
interesting account of the first meeting
of Parliament, for which members were picked up from
around NZ by a single steamer and delivered to Auckland...

| The
Chinese embassy has tried
to play down accounts that a spokesman made
a threatening phonecall to United Future party leader
Peter Dunne after he attended the Taiwanese inauguration
ceremonies. Officially, NZ still acknowledges China's
claim that Taiwan is a part of China. |

New Zealand garden
won a gold medal at the Chelsea Flower Show
and was the first stop for the royal tour of the show.
The Pink and White Terraces themed garden is NZ's first
ever entry to the prestigious event and designers had
been hoping for a minor recognition at most. |

| The
US embassy in Wellington is promising to double-check
claims by a New Zealander that he was held
in captivity by US forces in Iraq. Andreas
Schafer says the Afghan, Pakistani and Iranian stamps
in his passport probably aroused suspicions leading to
his incarceration and four interrogations before he was
allowed to call home. He is now safely in Jordan. |

Budget
comes out tomorrow, with Labour expected to
make the most of its last chance to spend the surplus
before next year's election. |

And
there's an interesting interview with musician Dave
Dobbyn on
the Listener: "So, the passion
is still there? Well, it's clearer now, because
I'm not pissed. I'm more focused and a much better player,
singer and writer..."

Crusaders fought back valiantly in the Super 12
final, after conceding four un-answered tries in the first
twenty minutes, but it wasn't enough - the
Brumbies won their second Super 12 championship. |

| Still,
an impressive performance the fight-back was enough to
secure Andrew Mehrtens a last-minute
berth in the All Black trials next Tuesday
evening. |

the Black Caps had a disappointing finish to a
roller-coaster first test match against England, losing
by seven wickets after failing to scuttle a
single batsman over the last two sessions at Lord's. |
