News

A 15,000 strong hikoi arrived outside Parliament last week in full voice and a howling gale. Apart from one activist spitting at MP Parekura Horomia's feet and calling him a 'devil' the marchers were well behaved. Still, their en masse crossing of the Auckland harbour bridge last week left Transit with the $75,000 expense of checking they had caused no structural damage (they hadn't). The Seabed and Foreshore bill opposed by the hikoi passed its first reading in Parliament the day after the hikoi's arrival.

The hikoi was also the catalyst for Labour's defiant Maori MP Tariana Turia to announce her resignation from the party. She is expected to easily win the by-election which the major parties are going to ignore, and after finishing this term as an independent she will form the core of a new Maori party which she has promised will sweep all seven Maori seats. Problems for Labour.
A Kiwi civilian engineer was shot dead in the north of Iraq. He had no connection to the NZ military forces stationed in the south of the country and was no longer resident in New Zealand.

Several tonnes of GE-contaminated maize have entered New Zealand and possibly been distributed as widely as from Northland to the Hawkes Bay. Although this could potentially threaten NZ's GE-free status (which we need to export to some countries), the Government is playing the incident down...

Former Miss New Zealand and TV personality Lana Coc-Kroft was recovering in hospital over the weekend after collapsing from a mystery illness while filming in Fiji. She was airlifted to Auckland hospital and now said to be in a stable condition.

Sport
Well, we jumped the gun last HUHU, but the Canterbury Crusaders and the Waikato Chiefs are the two Kiwi teams in the Super 12 semi-finals.
The Crusaders will meet the Stormers in Christchurch, without Justin Marshall and maybe without Chris Jack as well, while the Chiefs will confront the ACT Brumbies in Canberra.
Stephen Fleming is a doubtful starter for next week's first test match against England. The Listener has an interesting interview with him about captaincy and the coming series against England: "“It's really exciting, and there's been a lot of blood shed to get there, but slowly and surely we've built the stocks up.”
New Zealander Bevan Docherty is the new world champion with his coach promising the best is yet to come during the lead up to the Olympics.
And the Australian netball team is hoping to 'shock' the world champion Silver Ferns in their approaching series...
Only in New Zealand
The Black Caps aren't the only elite Kiwi athletes in the UK at the moment: a former New Zealander has won the world worm charming championships in England by convincing an amazing 51 worms to surface in 15 minutes.
A passenger was surprised to find a frog living in her salad during a Qantas Melbourne-Wellington flight. The frog lost its life in the ensuing drama.
A 14 year old Hutt Valley boy underwent sex-change hormone therapy, and is now planning to have surgery to complete the process. John came out as Julie on mufti day, which was poorly received by his Wainuiomata College peers. "The flak I got was unbelievable...it was really, really bad."
And an association of astronomers is planning to build a full scale replica of Stonehenge in the Wairarapa, against a backdrop of the Tararuas.
