Dear homesick Kiwi,

A short week in NZ this week with the country taking Friday off for Waitangi Day. Here in Wellington people are gearing up for the annual two-day Rugby Sevens on Friday and Saturday - let's hope we can beat the Poms at this version of the game!

NEWS

Leading up to Waitangi Day, National leader Don Brash has suddenly taken political centre-stage with a controversial speech about the state of race relations and the Treaty in NZ. National leapt in the polls, suddenly coming in even first with Labour on 32%. Read the speech in full.

Not everyone was quite so pleased: National's only Maori MP has been sacked for refusing to toe the party line and Brash has received safety warnings about going to the Waitangi Day commemorations. He in turn is considering his own boycott of the event due to a partial media-ban.
Meanwhile, the "Good Bastards" club are campaigning to change "Waitangi Day" to "New Zealand Day."
NZ swept the Oscar nominations, with 11 nominations for Return of the King, including best director and best picture (no surprises), and the 13 year old star of 'Whale Rider' received an unexpected best actress nomination (unlike Nicole Kidman).
New Zealand literary giant Janet Frame has died. The novelist and poet's autobiography was made into the film "An Angel at My Table", won dozens of awards and was a Nobel prize contender. She was 79.
SPORT
The NZ Black Sox and the Americans look like the two title contenders as the world softball championships in Christchurch head into the play-offs.
New Zealand's Sevens squad has been named for the long weekend's tournament in Wellington, and the side is one of the fastest ever: five of the players can sprint 40m in under 5 secs.
And Greg Chappell, who ordered Australia's infamous under-arm bowl in 1981, has revealed in an interview that he was feeling stressed and that incident was a cry for help. Hearts are bleeding around New Zealand.

ONLY IN NEW ZEALAND
A club cricketer in Rotorua, fielding at the boundary, fell through the ground and into a hot spring. He was treated for burns to one leg, but fortunately it wasn't geyser temperature.

New Zealand's coolest bar has just opened in Auckland. That's a pun: it's carved out of ice.

And, groan, New Zealand Idol kicked off this week with thousands auditioning to become the latest manufactured pop sensation. The man in the Cookie Monster suit is appealing his rejection, he believes the judges were prejudiced because he was wearing a Cookie Monster suit.
