Dear
homesick Kiwi,
Well
so much for summer! Wellington at the moment is cold,
wet and stormy. Hopefully it will clear up for Cup Day
on Saturday, or move to where it's needed: Malborough
and Canterbury could use some drought relief.

Here's
more
about that weather I mentioned: revolting
in the North Island with power cuts, ferries cancelled
and trees uprooted. Across Cook Strait it's dry where
they need rain.

| New
Zealand's first case of people smuggling this week:
three people have been arrested
for smuggling Malaysians in to work on Marlborough
vineyards. |
|
| Kiwi
doctors are straining the NZ health system as they
move
to Australia in exchange for better working
conditions and more money. |
|
| It's
not surprising the Aussies are after Kiwi doctors, after
all we are more intelligent, according
to this study. On the IQ table, Kiwis are ranked
up with the famously brainy Belgians, while your average
Aussie is left languishing mid-table with the Americans. |

Also,
19
drownings in 19 days is causing serious concern,
the Army
is under fire for its new $24,000 logo,
and the Government
is criticised for ignoring the work-for-the-dole
scheme which is working well in Australia...

| After
a 5-0 loss in the one-day series in Pakistan and a 1-0
test series loss to them at home, the Black Caps redeemed
themselves, winning the home one-day series 4-1.
The
last match turned out to be a nail-biter, with
some dynamic hitting propelling Pakistan to within a whisker
of NZ's 307/8. |

| Kiwi
Bob Charles, probably the best ever left-handed
golfer, played his farewell
tournament at the NZ Open, 50 years after first
winning it. |
|
| And
Graham Henry has signalled his plans to 'fine-tune'
a nearly great All Blacks team. He sounds very
old-school, emphasising possession and forward dominance
- even campaigning
for a daylight match for the first test of
the year, against England at Carisbrook. |

| A
police car chase around Johnsonville, Wellington
endangered
no-one, with the would-be fugitive's car only
averaging 20km/h. He eventually sped away on foot, and
was quickly apprehended. |

A

Police

| A
Christchurch man cut straight to the chase in London,
proposing
to a woman he met on the internet just 45 minutes
into their first meeting. "Soon Claire and I were
chatting away merrily, and after about 45 minutes I proposed
to her." (She said yes). |

| And
Tauranga
police considered taking to the beat with a
Greek super-weapon over New Year's. However, the idea
to scatter unruly crowds with loud Nana Mouskouri
music was eventually shelved. Perhaps they could not rely
on sufficiently good taste at the Mount... |
