Happy
New Year!!
Welcome
to the first HUHU of 2004. I look forward to keeping
you in touch with what's going on back home. No doubt
some of you homesick Kiwis got up to some interesting
things over Christmas/New Year - I relaxed with the
family at our bach in classic Kiwi-summer style!

Whatever
else is happening in the world, New Zealanders' optimism
for 2004 is soaring, according
to this poll from the NBR. "Seemingly,
we do know how lucky we are..."
|
|
| Canterbury
farmers are the only ones complaining at the moment, as
the hardest hit by the dry settled weather much
of the country is experiencing. There have been five
major fires since October as the summer dry
spell arrives a few months early. |
|
| 2003
was a great year for New Zealand music - an unprecedented
11 of the 50 biggest selling albums were by local musicians,
spanning the genres from classical to hip-hop. You may
be familiar with the Datsuns, Hayley Westenra and Bic
Runga, but if you haven't heard of Goldenhorse, Scribe
or Carly Binding you'd better catch
up here. |
|
| Unlike
British Airways, Air New Zealand has announced
it would be happy
to have armed marshals on its flights into
the US if asked. Also unlike BA, no-one's asked. |
|
| Our
farmers are hoping
to benefit as Asian countries look for new
beef suppliers as cows go mad in Washington state. |
|
And
it was a bad New Year's for celebrities in NZ:
Temuera
Morrison broke his leg in a motorcycle accident
Daniel
Bedingfield wound up in Whangarei hospital
Both are recovering well. |

|
| The
Black Caps looked impressive until their second innings
collapse paved the way to an embarrassing defeat in the
Boxing Day test and a 1-0
loss in series against Pakistan. |
|
| But
Scott Styris helped us salvage some pride with
a
walloping innings of 101 not out leading to
an exciting win in the first one dayer. |
|
| Before
Christmas, the NZ
Barbarians lost to an understrength England
team. Captain Taine Randell pinpointed the culprit: beer.
|
|
| Graham
Henry was named
the new All Blacks coach, and Wales jokingly
considered billing the NZRFU for training him. |
|
| And
Russell Coutts's
nomination for Sportsman of the Year has angered
some, after he led the Swiss Alinghi team to victory over
Team New Zealand in the America's Cup. |

| Raybon
Kan concludes he is 6% happier in his amusing analysis
of NZ opinion polls. 40% of New Zealanders
considered the nation to be: "Fine, dear, how are
you?" |

Two
ducks are missing, presumed dead, after a
family trip through Wellington's Terrace Tunnel went
horribly wrong.
|
|
| And
Pakistan's top cricket commentator arrived red-faced and
late at the Boxing Day test, after spending the morning
combing
Christchurch for the Basin Reserve. |
